Yet Another KDAB Employee

Seeing all the other postsrecently about people working at KDAB I thought I’d announce that my “secret dream employer” I previously mentioned I was freelancing for was, in fact, KDAB (the Qt consultants) and they decided to take me on as a permanent employee.

It’s an awesome place to work as I get to work from home which means playing my current favourite pretentious but awesome progressive rock nice and loud while I work without having to worry about irritating anyone else. It’s been awesome hanging out with the guys at GCDS and on my various expeditions (in their head office in Sweden at the moment). They are all really cool people who can have a decent laugh while getting lots of cool work done. It’s also been great for me to now have a job with so many amazing software engineers who I can learn from.

My only problem is that they seem like they are hiring everyone now. I thought I was special? Now I just feel like just another notch on the bedpost organisational chart! For each awesome person who gets hired I feel like I deserve to be here even less!

It’s also nice because it’s got me doing way more KDE stuff that I was previously. I’ve been actually getting involved in the KDE Mac project now and hopefully will get to push KDE forward through some (unannounced) work stuff too.

In short, KDAB rocks!

Good for you. But please tell me: What is KDAB actually doing? Whenever I read anything about KDAB, it sounds like you guys mostly work on KDEPIM apps. However, since Kontact crashed every second time on startup ( https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=193514 ), I find it hard to believe, as you must’ve encountered that bug, be quite annoyed by it yourself and fixed it months ago.

KDAB do lots of things and KDEPIM is a significant proportion of our OSS work. I’ve never seen that crash personally and I guess none of our guys see it regularly either or they would have fixed it by now. Kontact is used heavily internally and people fix crashes when they find them.

I’m sorry that you’re having problems but it looks like a relatively tricky bug to reproduce. Have you considered having a look at the code yourself?

Well, I’m not a programmer and a small patch I wrote for Kopete to add missing icons rots on Review Board since days with nobody even taking a look ( http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/1083/ ) — the Kopete guys are more concerned to discuss whether they should switch to Git instead of looking at patches.
So even if I was able to write a fix, it’ll probably rot there as well…

KDEPIM is very good at getting Review Board looked at. I spoke to Thomas (the KMail maintainer) and he said he hasn’t personally seen this bug.

If you want to feel special, you should try to get into KO. ;-)

Congratulations! Looks like a great place to work, and I hope things go well. I will soon be going to Kitware in October, assuming my visa is processed. Exciting times, and great to work for open source friendly companies.

Congratulations to your new job. It’s good to see how the business and the community can work successful together!
