Attracting the wrong kind of attention
February 12, 2007 @ 02:49
Wow, it’s been a long time since I last blogged, almost a month. Since my last exuberantly happy post, I’ll give you a run through of my life.
- Went to see Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, firmly cementing them as my favourite band of all time. Spock’s Beard, Dream Theater, we had some good times, but I’m sorry, you aren’t my favourites any more.
- Finished programming on my 4th year project (dissertation for you arts students). Currently working on the write up. It’s hard work, and not fun, but it’ll be good when it’s over.
- Been applying for jobs, headhunted for one, and received an offer for one. I’m not going to discuss the companies, salaries or locations until I get sorted what I’m going to do.
- Lindsay and I hit our 4 1/2 year anniversary. We are as happy as ever, and I love her dearly. Partly for this reason, I’ve got her a badass birthday present that she’s (hopefully) going to love.
- I’ve had some conflict with a friend, which sadly seems to have resulted in him shutting his blog down. We were both partly to blame, and I think my style of arguing points may well have contributed to this. You know who you are, and I’m sorry
- As you can see from the above picture, by bass is now dangerously high. This is, at least in part, due to seeing Victor Wooten at the Bela Fleck and the Flecktones gig, and noticing that the extreme speed of his slap bass is at least partly due to the high position of his bass. I’ve been trying the bass out high for a while, and it seems I can finger as fast as before, perhaps slightly faster, and slap a lot faster and more accurately. My left hand speed is slightly diminished, but I’m sure I can work it up again.
- I moved from Gentoo Linux to Arch Linux to Debian Linux, and I’ll probably move back to Gentoo again when I can be bothered. Also, when I can be bothered (probably after my project is handed in) I’ll review the distributions.
That’s probably about it. Other than that, I’ve either been seeing Lindsay, playing in church, playing in Powerpoint or, more likely, working.
Some people would be afraid of putting all the information, and talking honestly about themselves and their views on the internet, but for me its a useful tool in personal thought organisation and sharing my life with my friends. I guess I never really thought before that someone would take the limited look at my life you get from this website and my other online appearances, and mentally transform that into a real person they like or dislike.
I love analysing people. Be it body language, relationships, little habits, anything, I find it fun to work out how people tick. You can’t do that online. You only see of people what they are willing to show, which usually, isn’t a lot. I guess that’s why I find it strange people perhaps judging me on an online persona.
Some people seem to prefer the voyeurism the internet allows, and relish the power of judging people without knowing them. I guess I just find that a little sad. From personal experience, people are usually very different from how they portray themselves online, so have a think, and I will too, before you decide what a person is like from a blog post, Youtube video, email or IM.
Night all.
